It is named for Perth in Scoiland, the "Gateway to the Highlands". It comes from Gaelic 'peart', meaning 'hedge'.
The Noongar language was spoken in the area, but appears now to be extinct. Fortunately some records of it were made before its demise.
Perth was founded by Captain James Stirling in 1829 on the banks of the Swan River. It was to be the center of the Swan River settlement.
